better fit

Of all the sewing questions I get asked, or see other dressmakers express concern over, FITTING is by far the biggest. How do we get a good fit? How do we know when we DON'T have a good fit? How do we know WHAT TO DO to improve the fit of a garment?

The skill in altering the fit of a garment lies in understanding how to DIAGNOSE what must be changed and then how to ENACT those changes on the pattern pieces in order to get the desired result.

That's what this video series is all about.

This video series walks through the most common fit issues we experience when we sew garment patterns, and how to correct them!

SKILLS YOU'LL LEARN:

  • what a "good fit" means
  • how to use a fitting shell sewing pattern
  • the best tools for making pattern alterations for a better fit
  • how to make a muslin to test fit
  • how to "read the wrinkles" to diagnose fit issues
  • how to use a mannequin, or your body + a camera, to identify where fit needs to be corrected
  • how to properly measure your own body, even without help
  • how to lengthen and shorten a sewing pattern
  • how to move bust darts
  • how to raise and lower bust darts
  • how to change shoulder slope
  • how to adjust for large biceps or large thighs
  • how to adjust for a full tummy or full bottom

By the end, you'll have the skills you need to properly sew, diagnose, alter, and fit a sheath dress with waistline seam, bust and waist darts, and sleeves. These skills will apply to nearly EVERY pattern you sew in the future, and give your sewing brain the context to view each new pattern as a series of body zones where fabric can be manipulated to grace your form without flaws!
